In honor of the epic, newly released movie, today’s post is all about the Avengers! These cake pops are really easy to make using chocolate, fondant, and a tiny bit of icing and are kind of super adorable – like the baby versions of the heroes! I’m thinking they’d be pretty darn cute for a child’s birthday party, too!
As always, the first step is to get the cake pops all baked, prepped and dipped in chocolate! When forming them, make the cake balls into more of an oval than just a round ball so that they look more like faces. Since the details on these Avengers cake pops are going to be made in fondant, the cake pop needs to be dipped in the color of the character’s skin. So, I made one green for the Hulk, one red for Iron Man, one chocolate for Nick Fury, and four peach for Captain America, Thor, Black Widdow, and Hawkeye.
Ultimately, I made the call not to include Hawkeye because quite honestly, I didn’t know who he was or what his deal was (you caught me – I’m one of those hateful just-see-the-movies people) and he made a pretty boring cake pop. His costume is all in the body so he just looked like some sketchy dude creepin’ on the Avengers and I didn’t dig. All you hardcore fans out there, don’t hate please! It was an artistic call – I’m sure he’s still a total badass even if he makes for a cruddy cake pop.
Please note that Black Widdow only made the cut because I wanted a little girl power up in here!
Anyways, once you have them dipped and dried all lovely, it’s time to add the fondant details and make these Avengers cake pops come to life! For Captain America, cover the entirety of the cake pop in a very light frosting before covering it in blue fondant. Then used a toothpick to cut out the holes for his eyes. Iron Man can be done using the same method but it is only necessary to cover one side.
Thor’s helmet is similarly easy. Cover the top and back of the cake pop with gray fondant. Then, use a toothpick to cut the helmet so that it extends downwards in the middle. Next, create the wings by cutting three strips of fondant in decreasing sizes and attaching to the helmet with a tiny bit of water. They will have a tendency to flop so wait about 10 minutes; the fondant will become a bit stiffer in the air and then you can attach them.
All other details on these little Avengers cake pops (hair, noses, and ears) can also made in fondant and and can be attached with a small amount of icing. The eyes of all the characters are made with a dab black gel icing.
And there you have it! I have to say, I’m pretty thrilled with the result! The finished products are definitely a little cartoon-y but that’s also what makes them sort of adorable.
This little guy just might be my favorite!
